Merchant of Tennis hosts fundraiser for Jamaican schools

Sports figures help raise thousands at Bayview store

Rogers Cup tournament director Karl Hale welcomed attendees to a fundraising event at the Merchant of Tennis store on Bayview Avenue on Feb. 8.

Marking the launch of the Caribbean Cup Tennis Series, more than 100 people attended the event that is helping to raise $20,000 to build a school in Jamaica.

Hale himself was born in Jamaica and participated as a player and coach in Davis Cup for Jamaica. He founded the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation, which has raised more than $2 million for education in Jamaica and already built 18 kindergarten schools.

Other sports figures at the event included former world kickboxing champion Joe Valtellini and formerĀ  world champion squash player Jonathon Power.
